Many young people in this country cannot afford to go to college, and those who do are saddled with enormous debt. Student loan debt has surpassed credit cards as the number one source of debt in the country. College tuition has continued to rise at exorbitant rates, making college increasingly unaffordable and unattainable. A college education should be something that is available to everyone, not just those who can afford it.
State colleges and universities should be tuition-free. We also should stop charging our students high interest rates on government-issued student loans. We should not be making profit off our students. A strong, skilled, and competitive workforce requires investment in higher education.
I support our public schools and would support legislation investing in our public schools. We should ensure that all students have equal access and opportunity to a quality education regardless of socioeconomic background and where they live.
